When and why should you give Hari activated charcoal?
Charcoal has long been included in commercially available bird care starter kits. It is not as widely available today, but it is a must-have product to purchase when acquiring a new bird as a companion. We recommend always having activated charcoal on hand in your bird’s first aid kit to remedy an accidental ingestion of a toxin. There is no contraindication to administering a small amount of activated charcoal, which is what a veterinary hospital would do if they suspect that the bird has ingested paint flakes, lead, or another toxic substance.
How much activated charcoal does a bird need?
Charcoal is not something that is consumed regularly. This product should be administered inside the cage in small amounts. It is an excellent digestive aid. If a bird never eats it, it is not a problem; However, if a bird starts consuming it regularly, it could be a sign that the bird is trying to fight off parasites, pathogenic bacteria in the gut, or it could be an indication that something is going on in their body that is not entirely healthy.
HARI Activated Charcoal works a bit like a barometer for keepers, to see if the bird is missing something or is fighting off pathogens. We compare it to Crushed Oyster Shells, which should also always be available for consumption if needed. Chronic egg layers, such as young birds and nymphs, will start consuming a lot of crushed oyster shells before laying an egg. This alerts keepers, as they understand that their birds are getting ready to lay eggs and will need more calcium in their diet.
HARI Activated Charcoal is a product that we recommend to all keepers. It should be kept in a known location or in a first aid kit for your bird.
This product can be made available to your bird but it is not intended to be a source of nutrients and is quite granular, almost powdery, so it is best offered in a bowl and in small quantities. When offered in an aviary or where there are several finches or canaries and several feeding stations, keepers can provide a small bowl of activated charcoal nearby.
If the bird does not consume the charcoal, the keeper should not worry, as this is the most common occurrence. You will only ingest it if you really need it.
If we are already giving your bird a Clay-Cal supplement regularly, this product already has a small amount of charcoal in its composition, so it may not be necessary to offer additional charcoal in a separate bowl.
If you suspect that your bird may have ingested a toxin and you have given him activated charcoal, we still recommend that you go to your trusted veterinarian and inform him that you have already given him charcoal.
